Cisco creates five distinct business units that reflect our major networking product groups, naming a vice president/general manager to head each group. Each business unit, Workgroup, ATM High End, Access, Core and IBM Internetworking, have their own marketing and engineering organization. This structure formalizes a product sector grouping intialized by Cisco's expansion into new business sectors.

Our new eastern headquarters in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina opens. In 1993, Cisco hires its first employee in North Carolina, growing to over 200 within two years. Simultaneous with the dedication, a second building with 50% more capacity is announced.

In 1994, Cisco was awarded full ISO 9001 certification, the first major supplier of multiprotocol internetworking ever to do so. This certification assured our global customer base adherence to the most stringent and comprehensive quality management and assurance. Cisco President and CEO John Morgridge said, "Cisco products are found at the heart of the largest and most sophisticated networks in the world-networks that serve as the backbone for mission-critical applications as well as what is now being referred to as the data superhighway...ISO 9001 certification emphasizes that our total solution is based on quality."

Second Harvest Food Bank is the first community group Cisco supports with cash, infrastructure, food, and staff volunteers. The group was selected because of its wide reach in food distribution, providing the opportunity for maximum potential impact. Second Harvest estimated that the infrastructure support alone equaled providing an additional 2 million meals.
