Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert, or CCIE, is a technical certification offered by Cisco Systems. The first certification awarded was numbered 1024, a nod to the unreserved port numbers in TCP/IP.

By January 2000, 4451 people worldwide acheived CCIE status. By Novemember 2017, 59,737 CCIEs were listed in the Hall of Fame.

Catalyst Switch is introduced as the first intelligent switch for client/server workgroups with "plug-and-play" installation. Where a router connected networks, switches allowed for the connection of shared resources, enhancing workgroup productivity by increasing networking performance. The Catalyst is the first new product resulting from the Crescendo acquisition of 1993.

Cisco earns its first patent, No. 5,088,032, for its method and apparatus for routing communications among computer networks, Interior Gateway Routing Protocol. The computer networks are interconnected with a series of gateway circuits. Each gateway identifies all destination computers to which it is connected and identifies the path(s) to each destination computer.

After a soft launch the previous year, multi-media enabled Cisco Information Online (CIO) launches at Networkers 1994. CIO offers up-to-date online self-help and guided assistance including software updates and upgrades, product specifications, training programs and seminar schedules, and publishes a 'known bug list', one of the first to do so, allowing us to tap into the knowledge base of our customers and partners.

Chuck Robbins is appointed CEO of Cisco. In 2017 he is elected Chairman of the Board. As Chairman and CEO, Chuck is focused on helping companies, cities and countries around the world as they look to Cisco to connect everything and everyone by building the highly secure, intelligent platform for digital business. In his 20 years at Cisco, he has served as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations, Senior Vice President of The Americas, Senior Vice President of U.S. Enterprise, Commercial and Canada; Senior Vice President of U.S. Commercial Sales; and Segment Vice President, U.S. and Canada channel organization, where he was instrumental in helping build the industry's most powerful partner program.
