On January 12, a massive earthquake strikes Haiti, taking hundreds of thousands of lives, and damaging the telecommunications infrastructure, including the undersea cable linking the island nation to the world. Cisco TacOps deploys to Haiti before the end of the month. Ultimately, the team will support more than 20 entities, including the Haitian Prime Minister’s office, non-governmental and non-profit organizations, Internet service providers, and the United States military.

Cisco is added to Dow Jones list of 30 major stocks reflecting the overall health of US markets.  Robert Thomson, editor-in-chief of Dow Jones, notes Cisco earned its place on the list because its communications and networking products “are vital to an economy and culture still adapting to the Information Age – just as automobiles were essential to America in the 20th Century.”

Cisco provides funds and work teams to build the new homes, and even pre-wires the houses for Internet access. Habitat for Humanity notes that Cisco was the first U.S. company to direct more of its giving to international rather than to domestic recipients.
